I believe that your government's actions with regard to the manner in which
you cancelled the Spring Bear Hunt is a violation of the Constitutional
Rights of myself and my children. I will work tirelessly to bring you and
your government to court within the Province of Ontario, and the Federal
Courts of Canada. Your party leader, who just happens to be the Premier of
the Province, has taken you and your party down the road to destruction.

You, as the Minister of Natural Resources, will not of course place all of
the resources of the government at the disposal of the men and woman of your
Ministry to assure the fine people of our province that not one bear cub
will be allowed to be orphaned by a raging forest fire within the province.
You will not require that the forest industry not work in any area inhabited
by bears so that not one bear cub will be orphaned by a man made vehicle
while they are in hibernation. You will not use all of the resources of the
government to assure us that any sow and cub in danger of being hit by a
motorized vehicle on a man made pathway, road way or trail will not happen.

The natural resources of the northern part of the province have not been
protected and preserved by actions of a few in the south or even by the
majority of the south, but by the all northerners in the past and likely in
the future.

Here in the north we need only to change the minds of the people from two
ridings since the last election in 1995. The two members of the present
government do not have the best interests of the north at heart and they
should be heaved out.

The real efforts will take place in other ridings to inform, educate,
enlighten and convince the electorate that your government has not had their
best interests in mind either.

"A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" is an old saying which is
wrong because the bird in the hand is dead. The two live ones in the bush
will soon replace the one in your hand.

The 8, so-called and supposedly safe Conservative Seats in Southern Ontario
are not occupied by the dead, but by the misinformed.
Truth has a way, like a bear, of sneaking up on you and biting you in the
derriere, so grab your assets while you can.

To my fellow Ontario's, during the next election, make sure to line up the
right target, take careful aim, have a firm grip on the trigger (pencil),
hit a bulls eye, and throw this present government out.

It does not respect the Constitutional Rights of the all Citizens of our
province.

MIKE

The cancellation of the spring bear hunt has cost us an average of $17,900
In addition we estimate marketing cost of an additional $1,800 I have had a
couple of large groups tell me they are going to stay in the Minnesota and
Wisconsin area and not go to Ontario in the future. These same groups have
been coming to Woman River Camp the past 7 and 8 years. I f this had
occcured 2 or 3 years ago it probably would have made the difference between
staying in business or losing the camp. I feel very sorry for anyone that
has started out within the past year or two and trying to pay off a big
loan. It's crazy not knowing what to do at this late date as far as
bookings go . We have decided to return deposits for the hunt and to turn
down any inquiries.

Sincerely, Gary Wilkinson

Woman River Camp

Mike,
I have sent the below letter to Premier Mike Harris and John Snobelen.
Unfortunately if we do not have an answer regarding the final decision
concerning the cancellation of the spring bear hunt by Feb. 23, 1999 we
will be forced to cancel the reservation we have made in an attempt to
salvage a vacation for this year. Our dissatisfaction with the
situation brought on by Mr. Harris's decision is much greater than
expressed in the short statement below. We know your position and know
you have nothing to do with the ridiculous position the government of
Ontario has taken. However, plane tickets have been purchased, rental
car reservation made. All in all this decision has resulted in great
inconvenience to all of us and I'm sure many hundreds of other visitors
also. If the cancellation of the spring bear hunt is not rescinded I
can assure you we will not be returning to Ontario and we will be
lobbying our friends, fellow hunters and fishermen to do the same.

Thank You, Jerry Heater

Sir:
I find it regretful to be writing this letter. Nearly a year ago
myself, my wife and three other couples made reservations to come to
Ontario at the Canada North Lodge to enjoy the beauty and serenity of
Ontario. While there the activities were to include fishing and,
hopefully, harvest a bear in the spring bear hunt. The primary activity
was to be the bear hunt. If the spring bear hunt is canceled all eight
in our party will be canceling our trip to Ontario.

We do not have the luxury of being able to reschedule our vacations.
Once we sign up to take our vacation at a certain time that is the time
we are required to take our vacations. Your decision to cancel the
spring bear hunt at this late date will make it nearly impossible to
make similar plans somewhere else. If cancellation of the spring bear
hunt comes to pass I can assure you none of the eight in our group will
ever be coming back to Ontario. I understand you haven't canceled the
fall bear hunt, the fall deer season or the fall moose hunt. Your
timing of the cancellation would prevent us from rescheduling to the
fall hunt because of the above reason. Even if we could reschedule, we
would not. We believe you have every right to make and cancel hunting
season as you see fit. We support good wildlife and nature resource
management. We, on the other hand, have every right to not support any
government entity, anywhere, that supports radical groups that place
animal welfare and rights above human welfare and rights. We have one
tool to support our position, our dollars. You have the right and
obligation to do what you think is right. We have the right and
obligation to support, with our dollars, those who support our
position. At a recent boat, sport and travel show we discovered that
Saskatchewan and Manitoba Canada support our position. If the
cancellation of the spring bear hunt is not rescinded I can assure you
we will not be returning to Ontario and will be lobbying our friends and
fellow hunters and fishermen to do the same.

Spring bear hunt!

I operate a camp North of North Bay . the spring bear hunt only makes up
about a quarter of my revenue so I know I am small potatoes compared to the
many friends, neighbors and associates I have that will likely lose their
shirt because of this!! These beautiful animals 'they' are claiming to
protect will be starving and sick and shot as pests in the surrounding areas.
Now THAT IS OBSCENE!!! Responsible animal management has always been the
guideline we outfitters have gone by in the past and plan to continue in the
future. How can any reasonably intelligent person believe that this move has
anything to do with the beautiful bears they are claiming to protect? Come
on! I find that insulting! When this explosion of bears (and don't kid
yourself it WILL happen) are killing hundreds more moose calves (not to mention
that the neighboring dog, cat and livestock population will drop mysteriously)
who, or should I say whom will be blamed? Let me guess.... My business will
probably survive this year~~maybe. hundreds will not. people need to think
about where the missing government revenue generated by tourists and resident
hunters will be drawn out of. You know they will not go without! It will come
from someplace! Residents of Northern Ontario beware!!! No thought of the
ramifications of this ban will cause been publicized. Keep a CLOSE eye on
your children....they will be only part of the food chain soon! NO walks in
the bush. No camping on remote sites. No relaxing with your loved ones or
communing with nature. It will be just plain unsafe. I for one will weep when I
take my next load of trash to the local dump and find these gorgeous
creatures rotting in the pristine Northern Ontario sunshine because they were
in the wrong place at the wrong time just trying to survive because there are
so many bears there is no place for them to go. Boy! I could go on and on.
Make your opinions known!! ...but be sure it is an informed opinion! We have
enough bleeding hearts already. TRL/ld

Although I agree with your views about the spring bear hunt ban in Ontario, I
remain supportive of NOTO. Divide and conquer is historically w disaster. NOTO
has been a great organization in my experience and has repeatedly gone to bat
for the underdog. It is however unfortunate that you have had difficulties
dealing with them. I thank you for the support you have shown for we that will
suffer because of this very dangerous decision that was made without our
input. Linda Dorr~Temagami Riverside Lodge
